so not the boss

yes guys, this one's for you

Today’s rant was inspired by Alyssa Milano’s baseball blog entry (I know what you’re thinking, how did I overlook that literary gem?) entitled “The Female Fan and the Business of Baseball.” She tries to make the point that free agency will decrease baseball revenue because all of the female fans who get attached to one player are disappointed after they leave the team and they won’t buy as many jerseys. What she doesn’t say outright, though given the sexist nature of this post it is certainly implied, is that women go to the game and get excited about players because they are attractive.

Good ol’ Alyssa. Making her line of skank clothes for the female fan who is just too feminine to wear a jersey wasn’t enough and now she has to start talking. I was at the Dodger Stadium left field fan store on Wednesday and noted with dismay that Alyssa’s line is being sold in the store (photos to come) and one prominent item is a t-shirt that says boldly “I LOVE ROOKIES.” You know what, that is a lot of boys to be lovin’ you little skank. And while Alyssa is high-profile enough that she can lust after a player and be banging him the next night, but I think the majority of the women who enjoy the game have different motives and different reasons for loving baseball. For I-Hope-She’s-Not-The-Boss Milano, women are saddened because their favorite handsome player gets traded and they don’t have enough team loyalty to stick with the game. But not for men, of course, they love the game for entirely different reasons and don’t have favorite players at all.

Bullshit.

People, men and women, love the game for the skill, the athleticism, the excitement and the strategy. They love the peanuts and cracker jacks and not caring if they ever get back. Just because one Alyssa Milano lusts after starting pitchers and ends up dating them does not mean all women are the same way. But if such broad sweeping generalizations are okay, well then let me make my own: Actresses have poor writing skills, can’t truly experience the game since they are in their special VIP seats and aren’t with the real fans, and their blogs are narrow-minded sheltered expressions of life in their own delusional la-la land. Actresses should be seen and not heard, and once they are regulars on the WB they should not be considered actresses at all anymore.

  1. While I usually am behind you one hundred percent, and I totally agree the Rookies t-shirt is beyond assinine, I do actually believe that women often root for certain players while men just blindly follow the team - and I don’t think this means we are all just player chasers like Milano. I’ve grown up a huge sports fan, going to Rams and Angels games since I was in kindergarten, and I remember being furious when the Angels traded Jim Fregosi (ok, so it was for Nolan Ryan - give me a break, I still had my baby teeth). I don’t think this is any worse than just rooting for the “team” regardless of who is on the field, or hating a former player who was traded. Don’t get me wrong, the Angels are still my team, but I am also happy to see former Angels doing well elsewhere - and this isn’t because I want to sleep with David Eckstein.

  2. I love your last sentence!

I just hope and pray that Alyssa sticks with baseball and doesn’t get involved with politics or animal rights. Actors who flatter themselves that they know something about those topics really get up my nose.
