treo tribulations

Dear Treo:

I hate you. I hate that I had to get a new one of you which arrive 3 weeks ago and I have had to do a “hard reset” a.k.a. complete wipeout of all data THREE TIMES NOW because you freeze up.

First it gets in this endless loop of resetting for no reason, usually after I sync it.

reset loop

Apparently this is not uncommon as it is in the FAQ of the Treo support site. It tells you to “soft reset” which does nothing, then “warm reset” which breaks the loop but takes you here:

turn me on

No, actually, now that I think about it, I don’t want to turn it on. It’s a lot more useful turned off so that I can’t send or receive any calls or data. I really only purchased it as a paperweight and to seem important, so turning it on is really superfluous and a waste.

So I click yes. Doesn’t turn on. Click yes again. Doesn’t turn on. Do a “soft reset.” Oh look, it’s gone back into the loop.

the loop, again

Do a “warm reset” again. No help. Do the “first half of a hard reset/ second half of a warm reset” (I think this should be called a “semi reset” or maybe a “chubby reset” since it is only half hard but still rather warm”). Oh look, no help. So I try going to the internet browser to see if that will perk it up.

auuuuuuuuuuuuugh

Oh right! You’re supposed to turn it ON before you use it? Well color me silly I had no fucking clue. Does it ever occur to the little elf in there who puts up the error messages that I in fact tried to turn the piece of shit on about 800 times and it still doesn’t work?!?!? Guess not.

At this point I sync it (it allows you to do this, at least) and then do a “hard reset” which means we went all the way, finally, erased all of the data and start from scratch. Then spend 30 minutes setting up wireless sync and e-mail server all over again, all the while knowing that this state of “functioning” is rather unstable and extremely temporary.

This is the whole reason I returned the FIRST Treo 700p. I guess that one wasn’t defective, it was just normal. I feel sort of bad for it now.

  1. This is why Mr. wskrz will be replacing his newly toddler-damaged cell phone with an iphone and not a Treo.

Thanks for the heads up, Mal.

  2. Wow. It is amazing at the speed of blight in today’s technology. It is the MicroShaft mindset that lets consumers think problems with expensive technology is to be expected.
Uh, NO IT ISN’T. If I’d just paid an exhorbitant amount of money for a phone/handheld computer, I’d expect the damn thing to work even underground. Don’t push your crap into the marketplace unless it works right 99% of the time.

No wonder there are so many Luddites out there.
