sniffing out the truth
There is only one thing more annoying than people who make bold and dogmatic statements without any supportive evidence, and that is those who make these statements and back them with misinterpreted or irrelevant data or statistics to try to fool you into thinking they know what they’re talking about. This drives me absolutely insane.
Although the most dreaded part of my undergraduate week was Friday morning Journal Club (as it resembled a club in zero ways, no secret handshake, no tree house, no music, no DJ, not even any sandwiches), I am now grateful that I learned to read data critically and understand that just because someone spews for a whole lot of interpretations, they are not necessarily correct. They also forced me to remember that in vitro does no equal in vivo, children do not equal adults, rats do not equal humans, and case reports are not statistically significant. Unfortunately with blogs and the internet where any moron can vomit out a whole lot of bullshit and try to sound important, all of this has gone to the wayside. I cringe at the thought.
Sometimes I try to research things on the internet. It is inevitable that at least one time per search, I encounter the blog of someone who clearly lacks the skills to read critically and goes ahead and posts their interpretation of data. When I’m lucky enough, they link to the actual reference, and then you realize they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Like even the abstact confused them to the point that they couldn’t regurgitate a summary.
To all of these people, I ask you just to shut the fuck up. Admit you don’t know what you’re talking about, and stop littering the internets with your worthless bullshit. There are enough people out there who actually are experts in the field, and I’m tired of wading though all of your crap to try to find them.
End rant here.
